Maykop, which translates to “Apple Valley,” was founded in the second part of the 19th century as a fortress. It is now home to about 167,000 people of around 80 different nationalities. It is famous throughout the country for its white cheese.

The torch route in Maykop began at the city’s hippodrome, proceeding to Lenin Square and Central Park before ending at Druzhba stadium, where 8,000 people gathered to see the Olympic flame.

Some 60 torchbearers - including 1972 Olympic champion in weightlifting Mukharby Kirzhinov and silver medalist of the 2008 Games, handball player Anna Kareyeva – carried the Olympic flame through the city.
